Lamborghini Sesto Elemento Concept

The world expected Lamborghini to unveil itsMurciélago replacement at this year’s Paris auto show—production of the wildest bull has already ended—but the supercar maker chose instead to tease us with this concept, saving its new flagship for next March’s Geneva auto show. Ah,you must now be thinking, so this smaller car previews a Gallardo replacement! Nope, it’s not that either.
What, then, is the Sesto Elemento? Let's have a look at the exterior first. Despite the mid-engine layout, this concept seems compact, with a very short rear overhang. Wedgy shapes are typical for Lamborghini, but this car is even more extreme than the super-angular Reventón, the ultra-low-volume Murciélago spinoff from a few years ago. A plethora of spoilers, air vents, and triangular elements protrude from or perforate its body. There is a racing-type quick-refueling system. The rear end is open, to give spectators a clear view of the transmission and the exhaust system, the latter of which, remarkably, exits through the engine cover above the taillights.
The front end and roof are marked by sharp, seemingly folded creases, and the rear part of the roof is graced by two intake ducts and two parallel lines of five holes arranged above the cylinder banks. Below the ten openings sits, obviously, a V-10. The hexagonal shape of these elements is a nod to an obsession of former Bertone designer Marcello Gandini, who penned the Miura and Countach.
Seems Familiar and Futuristic
Despite an overt familiarity to its shape, the Sesto Elemento is nevertheless detached from the brand's current styling language. The wild details turn it into something you’d expect only in a video game, or in some crazy tuner's showroom, but not quite from Lamborghini, not after the brand has been working hard to overcome the styling clichés of its past. In fact, we hear there was a considerable amount of discussion within Lamborghini and at parent Audi about showing such an extreme concept car. In the end, the view prevailed that it wouldn't hurt to deviate a bit from the production models' somewhat aloof and architectonic proportions and design—traits that will apply to that Murciélago replacement, by the way.

One of the most striking features of the Sesto Elemento is that its entire body is constructed from visible, matte-finish carbon fiber (the so-called "sixth element” indicated by translating the concept’s name from Italian), as expensive a material as it is light. In fact, the curb weight of the entire car is claimed to be a mere 2200 pounds. That's 1100 fewer than our estimated curb weight for the supposedly “superlight”Gallardo Superleggera.
Wicked Quick
Combine the low weight with the V-10’s 570 hp at 8000 rpm—torque stands at 398 lb-ft at 6500 rpm—and performance should be explosive; Lamborghini says the car is capable of reaching 62 mph in 2.5 seconds. Top speed—only mentioned, says Lambo, "in the interests of completeness,” as top speed has been downgraded to the fourth-highest priority for its products—is said to be “well over 185 mph.” We suspect this modesty belies a terminal velocity north of 200 mph.
The use of carbon fiber extends beyond exterior panels: The passenger-holding monocoque, front subframe, crumple zones, and wheels are made of the material as well. The rear subframe, by contrast, is made of aluminum. Most anything else has simply been omitted. There is no dashtop—the underlying structure itself is laid bare—and the seat cushions are glued to the monocoque. One element we wish had been included is a clutch pedal. The Sesto Elemento is equipped with the e-gear six-speed automated manual transmission; power runs through it to Lambo’s all-wheel-drive system.
Foreshadows Future Lambos
If the sinister design won’t redefine Lamborghini styling, the Sesto Elemento is nevertheless significant as a rolling testament to the brand’s commitment to carbon fiber; all future Lambos will make extensive use of the stuff. AWD systems and heavy, ten- and twelve-cylinder engines take their toll on curb weights, and eliminating hundreds of pounds through the use of carbon fiber will give Lamborghini a potent weapon in the fight to create the most extreme supercars.
It's good politically for the brand within the VW Group, too. With its sales numbers taking a dive, Lamborghini needs another leg to stand on, and carbon-fiber expertise will for the first time make the raging bull a technology leader among VW’s brands. Lamborghini is working with the University of Washington in Seattle to develop its carbon-fiber tech, and aircraft maker Boeing is a partner in the university's Lamborghini Advanced Composite Structures Laboratory, too.
Yes, we were hoping to see the next Murciélago, but we’ll admit the Sesto Elemento is one hell of a substitute, and it further raises our expectations for the next production Lambo. This thing is so over the top, it’s almost too much—just as any proper Lamborghini should be.

Mother's Day

Mother's Day

‘Mom’, ‘Maa’, ’Mae’, or ‘Haha’, the words might be different in different languages but signifies same everywhere: unconditional care, love, concern and sacrifice . The place that a mother holds in child’s heart is same all around the world. The first word that a child learns to speak is mother, whether one is happy or sad, she is the first person to know it all! For a child, her mother always remains the center of attention. She shines like a guiding star, whose trail kid follows. In each country and every culture, mothers are respected for their selfless devotion towards child. Mother’s day is the day to acknowledge her unconditional love, support, and the efforts in raising her kid. This day is celebrated across the globe though on different dates. In most of the countries, this day is celebrated on the second Sunday in the month of May. However, there are countries like Thailand, where Mother’s Day is celebrated on Twelfth August of every year. Similarly, celebrations also vary from country to country. It’s interesting to know how different culture and traditions capture the spirit of this special day. If you were wondering how the day is celebrated in Thailand, then this article is your answer.

Mother’s Day Celebrations In Thailand
In Thailand, 12th August is celebrated as the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit and the nation immerses in celebrations. As the Queen is also regarded as mother to all Thai people, this day is also celebrated as ‘Mother’s Day.’ It’s since 1976 that the celebrations for Queen and for mother are being held every year without cease. Thai people unanimously commemorate this day because of the queen’s benevolence towards needy and poor in the nation. The Queen has captured the hearts of Thai people through her devotion toward welfare and well- being of her people.

A few weeks before the Queen’s birthday, preparations start at full swing. For this occasion, people all around the country raise national flags and houses are decorate with the portrait of Her Majesty the Queen. This is their way of expressing their loyalty and honor to her. Similarly, local organizations are bedecked with her portraits, garlands, and colorful lights. In the capital city Bangkok, Ratchadamnoen Avenue, Sanam Luang, the area around Grand Palace is bedecked with colorful lights and firework display is an added attraction. Around Bangkok, the area around the Grand Palace and other well-known locations are bedecked with colored lights and firework display serves as an added attraction.

On the day, early in the morning government officials, royal army, students, teachers, gather around high the high tower clock. They form a procession and walk to the king’s palace. On its way to the palace, music band plays popular music pieces. After arrival at King’s palace, the procession presents flowers to the representative of the HM the Queen. It’s followed by song ‘‘Mother of Kingdom’, praising both Queen and King. In the evening ceremony at the Queen’s garden, government officials lit candles. In this way, they pay respect to the Queen and pay for her long life.

Not only limited to birthday celebration of the Queen, Thai people also take this day as an opportunity to thank their dear mother for her unconditional love. Mother’s day morning in Thailand starts by giving alms to the monks. Following the Thai tradition, kids kneel down before their mother to show their love and gratitude. They present her with white jasmine flowers or garlands, in return, mother shower her blessings on kids. On this day, white jasmine flowers are a common sight in Thailand as they are the symbol of maternal love. The white color of the flower symbolizes purity of mother’s true love, which will never change. Charitable activities, donations, offering to monks are also an important part of the day to express child’s love and gratitude towards mother.

' No reds in new Cabinet '

Yingluck's declaration yesterday

Pheu Thai source: Party doesn't want image to be tainted; Yingluck joins hands with Chart Thai Pattana, Chart Pattana Puea Pandin, Palang Chon and Mahachon

There will be no red-shirt leaders in a new Cabinet to be headed by Pheu Thai Party's would-be prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra, according to a party source.

However, Yingluck herself has not ruled out the possibility. The Pheu Thai source implied that the party should not allow red-shirt leaders to taint its hard-earned positive image.

"The image of this new Cabinet must be very good because there are high public expectations. We have grown a tree and should not let anything destroy it," the source said after Yingluck announce a Pheu Thai-led coalition yesterday.

"This will be the last chance for the party. If Pheu Thai lets a new problem emerge, not only will the party be unable to survive, the Shinawatras will also be doomed." The source was referring a red-shirt leader being admitted to a Pheu Thai-led Cabinet.

At the SC Park Hotel yesterday, Yingluck and senior representatives from five political parties announced a new coalition - Pheu Thai, Chart Thai Pattana, Chart Pattana Puea Pandin, Palang Chon and Mahachon.
According to unofficial election results, the new coalition will have 299 elected MPs, with 265 of them
coming from Pheu Thai.

Yingluck, who is the youngest sister of fugitive ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra, said that she would wait for the official results to be announced by the Election Commission.
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank the leaders of all the parties that have showed their intention to work with us in solving the country's problems. This is the joint intention of the five political parties and I am determined to serve the people," she said.
She added that thanks to the party's majority in the lower House, she was convinced her government would be stable.

Yingluck, who is set to become the country's first woman prime minister, said that she would appoint knowledgeable and capable people to her Cabinet. When asked if any red-shirt leaders would become ministers, she said she would look into the matter in detail and discuss it with other people.
She neither denied nor confirmed speculation that Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwan, who is close to the current Army top brass, would be re-appointed to serve in her Cabinet. "It is too early to answer this question," she said.

When asked about possible political amnesty, Yingluck was still firm that her party had no policy of granting amnesty to any individual - referring to her brother Thaksin, who is escaping a two-year jail sentence handed down by the Supreme Court in October 2008 for abuse of power.

A Pheu Thai source said yesterday that the smaller parties in the new coalition were pushing for the Cabinet portfolios they wanted, which could lead to conflict and threaten the coalition's stability.

Chart Thai Pattana is pushing for the agriculture minister's seat and deputy House speaker's post, Chart Pattana Puea Pandin for the Energy portfolio, and Palang Chon for the tourism minister's seat, according to the source. Pheu Thai is eager to keep those Cabinet portfolios for itself, citing its commitment to voters to implement its policy platforms that involve those ministries, such as issuing credit cards for farmers.
It was agreed among the new coalition partners that they would get one Cabinet seat for every eight MPs they contribute to the coalition, the source said.

Thanks to Pheu Thai's elected majority, the party has no need to expedite the formation of a new government. It will wait for the Election Commission to announce the official election results because these may affect the final number of House seats and the quota each coalition partner will get, the source said.
Yingluck is likely to oversee the economy-related ministries, the source said. However, another party source said Olarn Chaipravat would assume the job of economic-team chief.

The Pheu Thai source also said that Thaksin would have the final say about Yingluck's Cabinet. "It all depends on Thaksin," the source said.

Leading candidates for the Interior portfolio are reportedly Pracha Promnok, Chat Kuladilok and Pheu Thai leader Yongyuth Wichaidit, who is said to be favoured by Thaksin.

Leading candidates for the House speaker's seat are Apiwan Wiriyachai, who served as deputy House speaker in the previous House of Representatives, and veteran politician Chalerm Yoobamrung, according to the source. It is unlikely Yongyuth will become the new House speaker due to his lack of political adroitness, although he is trusted by Thaksin, the source said.

"I know little about politics, but I hope the Pheu Thai party. Developing countries even further."

Doi Mae Salong !

Doi Mae Salong is one of those places where the journey there is more beautiful and worthwhile than the place itself. Don't miss this trip, as it leads on a very good road through beautiful mountains. The splendid views on the way alone are worth driving to Mae Salong. The little town was founded in the 1960s by former Kuomintang (anti-Communist) soldiers who had been expelled from Burma (Myanmar) and settled on the lovely mountain, unfortunately only in order to compete with the local drug barons for a sizable share in the opium and heroin trade.

On the way to Doi Mae Salong

At that time Mae Salong was more or less a fortress. When the Chinese were defeated by the more powerful Shan lord Khun Sa they opted for the more peaceful and socially acceptable business of fruit growing. The peaches and lychees from Mae Salong are delicious and justly famed. Today MAE Salong is entirely safe and peaceful. On the way lies the Akha village Ikoh San Yuek that is worth a detour. Although it is nowadays overrun by tourists its shops nevertheless still offer a good selection of traditional hill tribe handicraft. After the village the road parts - the road to the right should be avoided (it leads into dangerous territory), instead drive ahead.

Hill Tribe Village
Hill Tribe Village

Mae Salong is 1800 meters above the sea level and cool enough for Japanese cherry trees to bloom - as you will see if you come in the right season. The town has Chinese temples, open air bazaars, and shops that offer Chinese specialties as tea and locally grown preserved fruit. There are several little restaurants that offer good southern Chinese food, and even a couple of simple, but clean guest houses. Mae Salong is also a market place for the Lisu and Akha from the surrounding hill tribe villages. For these reasons it is definitely worth spending a few hours in the town, to walk around, savour the special atmosphere, and to enjoy the grandiose mountain
panorama.

Sample Learning Agenda

Where do I start?

Why do you want to learn English?
Before you begin (or go back to) studying English, ask youself one question. Why do I want to study English? Is it because you want to, or because someone else wants you to? Like every decision in life, studying English must be something you want to do.
Set goals
If you know why you want to study, setting goals is easy. For example, maybe you want to travel to an English-speaking country. Great. Your goal might be to learn "Survival English". Perhaps you already know many useful phrases, but you want to improve your listening skills and pronunciation. Whatever your goals are, write them down.
Make an agenda
How long do you need to study to achieve your goals? This answer is different for every student. The important thing is to be realistic. If you work 60 hours per week, don't plan on spending another 40 hours a week studying English. Start off slow, but study regularly. Use material that is challenging, but not too difficult. Find out what works for you. After you have studied for a few weeks, adjust your study schedule accordingly. Do you study best at night, or on the bus on your way to work? Do you like to study alone in a quiet place, or with friends and background music? Click here for a sample 4 week agenda.
Make a commitment
Learning English requires a lot of motivation. Nobody is going to take your attendance when you aren't in class. If you are sure you are ready to begin studying, make a commitment. Click here to sign a contract with yourself.
Have fun learning English!
The things we do best in life are the things we enjoy doing. If you aren't having fun learning English, you're not studying the right way! You can be a serious student who has fun at the same time. Make up your own rewards program to give yourself incentives to stay on task.

Study a Balance of the 4 Key Skills
(Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing)

Most students want to communicate better in English. If this is one of your goals, it is important to study a balance of the four major skills. Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing are the main (macro) skills you need to communicate in any language. Being very good at only one of these skills will not help you to communicate. For example you need to be able to read well before you can write well. You also need to be able to listen before you can speak. It helps to think of these communicative skills in two groups.
  • INput <<<
    • Listening (in through your ears)
    • Reading (in through your eyes)
  • OUTput >>>
    • Speaking (out through your mouth)
    • Writing (out through your hand)
It's simple. Think of it this way. First you have input. Next you have output. First you listen to someone ask you a question. Second you speak and give them your answer. First you read a letter from someone. After that you write back to them. These are examples of communicating.
Input and output don't necessarily go in a specific order. Sometimes you speak first and then you listen. Sometimes you write about something you hear. During communication, the person you are communicating with uses one of the opposite skills. Therefore, in order to understand each other, everyone must be skillful in all four areas.
Some students want to know which skill is the most important. Since all of the skills rely on each other, they are all important. However, to communicate we do use some skills more often than others. For example, about 40% of the time that we spend communicating we are simply listening. We speak for about 35% of the time. Approximately 16% of communication comes from reading, and about 9% from writing. These statistics are for an average communicator in English. Depending on someone's job or situation, these numbers may vary.
Each of these main skills have micro skills within them. For example, pronunciation is a type of speaking skill that must be practised in order to improve communication. Spelling is a skill that makes understanding the written word easier. Grammar and vocabulary are other micro skills. Micro doesn't mean they are unimportant. Macro skills such as listening are very general, while micro skills are more specific. (More about input and output)
For the best results, create an agenda that combines all four areas of study. Allow one type of studying to lead into another. For example, read a story and then talk about it with a friend. Watch a movie and then write about it. This is what teachers in an English class would have you do, right? EnglishClub.com has lessons in all 4 key skills (and all minor skills), as well as many outside links to help you study further. (ESL Internet resources)

1. How to learn LISTENING

  • Listen to the radio
Don't always have a pen in hand. Sometimes it helps to just listen.
  • Watch English TV
Children's programming is very useful for ESL learners.
Choose programs that you would enjoy in your own language.
Remember that much of what you hear on TV is slang.
  • Call Automated Answering Machine recordings
You can find these numbers at the front of telephone books in many English-speaking countries. Before you dial, make sure that you are calling the free numbers.
  • Watch movies
Choose ones with subtitles, or one from ESLNotes.com (provides useful notes on popular movies).
  • Use Internet listening resources
Every day there are more and more places to listen to English online.
  • Useful Listening links:
    EnglishClub.com English Listening

2. How to learn SPEAKING and pronunciation

  • Talk to yourself
Talk about anything and everything. Do it in the privacy of your own home. If you can't do this at first, try reading out loud until you feel comfortable hearing your own voice in English.
  • Record your own voice
This might feel very uncomfortable, but it will help you find your weak pronunciation points. Listen to yourself a few days later. Which sounds do you have difficulty hearing?
  • Use the telephone.
  • Participate in class
  • Learn common idioms
  • Understand the sounds that your language doesn't have
For example, many languages don't have the "r" sound. These sounds require extra practice.
  • Recognize that teachers are trained to understand you
When you get out into the real world, average people will have a more difficult time understanding you unless you practise speaking slowly and with proper pronunciation.
  • Practise minimal pairs
  • Study word and sentence stress
  • Practice tongue twisters
  • Useful Speaking links:

3. How to learn READING and vocabulary

  • Read something every day
Children's books, simplified readers (Penguin), newspapers, magazines, Internet sites, novels, and much much more...
  • Read what interests you.
Remember that you learn better when you are having fun.
  • Read at the appropriate level
You want to learn new vocabulary, but you also want to understand what you are reading. If you are looking up every word, the reading is too difficult.
  • Review Who, What, Where, When, Why for each story you read
You can do this for almost any type of reading. Who is it about? What happened? Why did it happen? Where did it take place? When did it take place? This is very useful when you have no comprehension questions to answer. You can write or speak your answers.
  • Always have an English-English dictionary nearby
It is a bad habit to always rely on a translation dictionary or electronic dictionary.
Think of your English-English dictionary as your life line.
Use online dictionaries when you are using the Internet (keyword online dictionary).
  • Record vocabulary in a personal dictionary
    • Keep this notebook separate from other work
    • Record vocabulary in alphabetical order (an English address book works well because it has letters of the alphabet)
    • Record the part of speech (sometimes there is more than one)
    • Write a sample sentence for yourself (don't use the one from the dictionary)
    • Review your personal dictionary (especially new entries) every night before bed
  • Useful Reading links:
    EnglishClub.com English Reading

4. How to learn WRITING and spelling

  • Keep a diary/journal
Don't always pay attention to grammar. Free-writing can be very useful. It can show you that writing is fun. Have fun with the language.
  • Write emails in English
Stay in contact with teachers or other students.
  • Rewrite your local news in English
This is another exercise that can be done on a daily basis. Remember that regular activities are the best ones.
  • Learn important spelling rules
Remember, you won't always have a dictionary or a spell-checker handy, especially when you are writing a test. Even native English speakers need to review the spelling rules from time to time.
  • Learn commonly misspelled words
  • Learn common English errors
  • Get an ESL penpal

More TIPS for learning English

Don't be afraid of grammar

  • Grammar is for communication
Sometimes students get obsessed with grammar. This is especially true for students who grew up with strict grammar schooling. Remember that you only study grammar in order to communicate. Practise with a few exercises, then write an essay or have a conversation and try to use your new tools.
  • Isolate your weak points
Don't waste time on grammar exercises that you already understand just because they are easier for you. Concentrate on grammar that is difficult for you. If you are unsure of where your problems are, write a few short essays or paragraphs and ask a teacher to circle repeated errors. Then you can look up your problem and practise it.
  • Teach grammar points to a friend
Find a friend who studies at a lower level than you. Teaching will force you to remember the rules and to understand them properly. Try preparing a worksheet for your friend.

  • Write an English love letter. (If your loved one doesn't understand English that's even better!)
  • Write English limericks. (These are excellent and simple for writing, pronunciation and rhythm practice.)
  • Rewrite fairytales, jokes or instructions in English.
  • Go out and pretend you don't understand your native language (try to get by in only English).
  • Go online and find the lyrics to your favourite English songs and sing along to them (use a search engine).
  • Learn the words to English national anthems. Sing along when you hear them on TV (sporting events).
  • Invent an English character for yourself (with job, family, etc). Write this person's biography.
  • Buy an English board game (like Monopoly or Scrabble).
  • Play cards in English.
  • Start up or join an English reading or conversation club.
  • Talk to yourself in English while you clean or do the dishes.
  • Go around the house and try to name everything in English (furniture, clothes etc). Look up words you don't know.
